When you've lost all hope
And excuses
And the cheapskates and the losers
Nothing's left to cling on to
You gotta hold on
Hold on to yourself
Besides the words, I liked the music behind Billie's voice and if you listen, it sets the mood for the lyrics to come; if that makes sense (?) Its a minor chord so it sound sort of... Deeper and slightly more tragic if that makes it easier to understand. (the chorus starts on an Em and goes to a G I think..)
What also caught my attention was the guitar solo after the 2nd chorus. The drums come in and combined with the guitar, it just sounds absolutely brilliant.
I was looking up the meaning of another song off the same album, Misery and decided to read what the site had to say about Hold On. This is what it said:
"I had a friend of mine that three of his friends passed away in one year so I wrote the song for him" - Armstrong.
-In this song we can see the pain of being left alone and having nothing and no one to hold on to ("nothing's left to cling on to"). The lyrics metaphorically describe the way from stepping "to the edge of the shadow of a doubt", to realizing that you need to make it through the night and even if it's not what you want, you know that you need to reach the break of day, and just wait for when it gets better. You need to hold on to yourself when there's nothing else left to hold on to, because after all, the only thing you really wouldn't be able to live without is yourself.-
When I read this, idk it just really seemed to touch my heart. That Billie Joe wrote a song for his friend. And when I look back at the lyrics, I can really see encouragement and love coming from the lyrics, telling you to never give up and "hold on to yourself" when all else has failed.
Im not sure about you but I think this song actually hold a very deep and strong message and to me, maybe its a sign from God because this song applies to me in a way at the moment.
If you're not sure, go and listen to the song; look up the lyrics. Its number 8 on the album Warning.
