Fashion Victim

So here I was at 6:15am this morning on GreenDayAuthority, reading which song they had elected as Song Of The Week. To my surprise, I saw that it was infact a song off the album I was listening to. Fashion Victim off Warning by Green Day. As I read the article, I saw how meaningful the lyrics were in context with todays world.

Lyrics are as follows:

He's a victim of his own time
In his "vintage suit" and tie
He's casualty dressed to the teeth
In the latest genocide
The new seasons come and go
At the dog and pony show
Gonna sit and beg and fetch the names
And fallow your dress codes
WHAT'S IN A NAME?...HEY!

She's a scented magazine
Looking sharp and living clean
Living well and dressed to kill
But she looks like hell to me

So when you're dancing through your wardrobe
Do the anorex - a go-go
Cloaked with style
For pedophiles as the credit card explodes

You auctioned off your life
For the "most" expensive price
Going once...
Going twice...
Now it's gone

(You the Crew)

You auctioned off your life
For the "most" expensive price
Going once...
Going twice...
Now it's gone

What's in a name, hey?
What's in a name, hey?
What's in a name?

Here's what GDA had to say about the song.

This week's Song of the Week is Green Day's dig at materialism and consumerism; Fashion Victim, track 4 of Green Day's 6th studio album, Warning.

The meaning behind
Fashion Victim's lyrics is fairly self-explanatory - they criticise and satirise people who follow the fashion and trends of mainstream society to try and fit in ("the casualties"); people who base themselves on brand names and are obsessed with keeping up with the in-crowd, even if they can't necessarily afford it, rather than being their own person and living their own life ("you auctioned off your life...").

If you look at the lyrics and look at the article, you will see just how relevant this song is today.

Know Your Enemy

Im kind of on a roll on songs. Ive decided to try and do...like and editorial type thing on my favourite songs. Like explain what they mean to me. And maybe try and get pictures to relate. So the song im focusing on now is Know Your Enemy-Track 3 off 21st Century Breakdown by Green Day. Im sure this is going to sound weird but I dont particularly like the music in the song but I feel that the lyrics have a really strong message.
In context with the story of this album, this song is Gloria (main female character in the story) trying to impress upon people how important it is to know your enemy so that you will see danger before it hits you

Do you know the enemy?
Do you know your enemy?
Well, gotta know the enemy, wah hey

Do you know the enemy?
Do you know your enemy?
Well, gotta know the enemy, wah hey

Do you know the enemy?
Do you know your enemy?
Well, gotta know the enemy, wah hey

Violence is an energy
Against the enemy
Well, violence is an energy, wah hey

Bringing on the fury
The choir infantry
Revolt against the honor to obey

Overthrow the effigy
The vast majority
Well, burning down the foreman of control

Silence is the enemy
Against your urgency
So rally up the demons of your soul

Do you know the enemy?
Do you know your enemy?
Well, gotta know the enemy, wah hey

Do you know the enemy?
Do you know your enemy?
Well, gotta know the enemy, wah hey

The insurgency will rise
When the blood's been sacrificed
Don't be blinded by the lies in your eyes
Sing!

Well, violence is an energy, oh ay, oh ay
Well, from here to eternity, oh ay, oh ay
Well, violence is an energy, oh ay, oh ay
Well, silence is the enemy so gimme gimme revolution!

Do you know the enemy?
Do you know your enemy?
Well, gotta know the enemy, wah hey

Do you know the enemy?
Do you know your enemy?
Well, gotta know the enemy, wah hey

Do you know the enemy?
Do you know your enemy?
Well, gotta know the enemy, wah hey

Overthrow the effigy
The vast majority
Burning down the foreman of control

Silence is the enemy
Against your urgency
So rally up the demons of your soul

Few words you may not know:
Effigy-image, statue or model
Insurgency-rebellion
Foreman-somebody, especially a man, chosen by the other members of a jury to be their leader
Revolution-the overthrow of a ruler or political system

Boulevard Of Broken Dreams

Okay well here I am, in Computers again... After a weird and some-what irritating Science lesson... Will tell all later. Anyway, as I was saying in the title, Boulevard Of Broken Dreams by Green Day is an amazing song. I actually did an oral on the lyrics last year and got like 90%. Anyway, I love the guitar at the beginning of this song and if you listen carefully, you can hear the amazing bass line too.

I love the lyrics because I feel that everyone feels lonely at some point in their lives. People find comfort in songs like these because they feel that the song writer feel/has felt the same way. I also love the music video and im not sure why.. Maybe because they're walking in the middle of nowhere; showing that the only person beside you is your shadow My shadow's only one that walks beside me.
I remember listening to this song for the first time last year. I just googled songs on American Idiot (the CD) and looked down the list for any interesting songs to look up. Boulevrad Of Broken Dreams caught my eye and I searched it. It wasnt until the ah-ah ah-ah ah-ah aaaaah-ah ah-ah ah-ah ah-ah part after the chorus that I though "Geez y'know this song is actually amazing.

I would include the lyrics of the song but I feel that that would ruin the point of this blog. You should look up the lyrics if you found this post interesting. Once yo have looked them up and maybe even watched the music video, read this post again and maybe you'll see why I feel that this song is so amazing.

Im not sure about you but my life revolves around music. When I listen to a song, I dont just hear the song. I hear the guitar and the bass and the drums and the lyrics. All seperately yet all in one.

Okay well the bells going to go in about 6 minutes and I need to publish this before then. Ill post later :)
And I dont have too much homework so ill be able to post later before the gala. CIAO

Songs In Pictures

Okay so a while back my mate Grace sent me this pic:

She just thought it was some random emo pic but its not; its from a Green Day song called She. Its goes She. She screams in silence. A sullen riot penetrating though her mind.

This one is from Jesus Of Suburbia by Green Day. The lyrics go Everyone's so full of shit. Born a raised by hypocrites. We are the stories and the disciples of The Jesus Of Suburbia.

This is from The Grouch by Green Day. The line is repeated after each verse. The first verse goes I was a young boy that had big plans. Now im just another shitty old man. I dont have fun and I hate everything. The world owes me so fuck you.

This is part of Jesus Of Suburbia. Um Part IV I think. The lyrics are above so im not going to repeat them.

And this finally is used in quite a few songs. Like Jesus Of Suburbia Im the song of Rage and Love.
Letterbomb You're just a figment of your father's Rage and your mother's Love.
Are We The Waiting The Rage and Love, story of my life.

Thats pretty much all I can think of with Rage and Love. If I think of any others, ill add them in. C'ya!

Random Thought For The Day

Okay so my friend and I were having a guitar lesson today and while the teacher was copying something for us, I was looking through her pictures and sending them to myself. Here's a few.

Who Said Dope?

Haha the other day, during war-cry practise at school, Grace gave me this really funny mental image.

She imagined us sitting on the floor at the back of the hall, high as kites with a joint stuck in the corner of our mouths, playing guitar. Probably songs about being high (cough) (Brain Stew by Green Day)
And otherwise generally being happy, high and playing guitar while the rest of the school's screaming their arses off. LMFAO.

EXCITING TIMES

Okay, so on Valentines Day, Billie Joe tweeted that they've officially started recording their new album.

Happy Valantine's day! Officially started recording the new
record today. It's FUCK TIME!!!!

And over the following days, www.greendayauthority.com have been posting videos of Green Day in action. VERY EXCITING TIMES FOR IDIOTS!!

Todays video relieved the suspense a little bit but also made it worse in the way that you're desperate to know what they're doing xD

Billie:“Its kinda like going out and having the utmost best intentions and then all of a sudden you just drag yourself through fuckin’ hell”
Mike: “And it’s a fuckin’ laugh”

Grace/Graceaphine/Gracey

Okay well she did a wonderful post about me so yes, im doing one about my fabulous best friend :)

Well. She came to my school at the beginning of the 3rd term last year when I had just come back from overseas. She sat somewhere behind me in Afrikaans and I sat right up against the black board. She irritated me. No hard feelings mate.

Anyway, one day I was made to sit next to her. I still found her weird until another of my friends asked her to sit with us at break. THEN I found out that she likes Green Day. I remember her pointing to Boulevard Of Broken Dreams written on my lunch box and saying "Ive got that song on my phone."
I will admit. I Was Impressed.

Anyway, we're now besties and all our friends are in the same class. The Awesome Foursome (named by Grace)

Oh and I forgot 2 vitally important facts.
1) Grace is the lead guitarist for out band, The Last Recluses
2) We have full on DMC's (Deep Meaningful Convo's) in Afrikaans. Like literally talking to each other in Afrikaans.

And something else. Grace is a Maths boff. Not even kidding.

In short Grace, you're

Okay im done :*

Holiday.....

Okay I forgot to post the link to the Holiday music video. Here it is :)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JfUr5eUHNUc

Holiday.

Well right now, I am at school, in a computer lesson.. Just a sec ... kay back :P
okay anyway, as I was saying, im at school atm.. its 9:10am and we're one lesson before break.. we have English next. I think we're going to finish reading Of Mice And Men.. And then we may watch the movie. I hope we do both.

Okay so anyway, as I am writing this, I am also loading and about to watch the Holiday (by GD) music video.

And im also looking up pictures to post. LOL wait.. what times does this lesson end?? I better hurry up :|
<---The song is basically a f**k war song. And I guess its true.
Its also a stuff politians (yes that is spelled wrong) song. Okay I think the bells going to go soon. Bye xx

Hallelujah

Okay, so my mate showed me this song called Hallelujah. At the time I thought it was weird.. Till we danced to it at one of my dance classes. I asked my friend to send me the song. Yesterday, I was learning how to play it on guitar and I looked at the lyrics. They actually have quite a deep spiritual meaning. Look at the references to David and the Lord and God (in the last verse) Its written by Leonard Cohen and sung by Jeff Buckley.

"Hallelujah"

I've heard there was a secret chord
That David played, and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do you?
It goes like this
The fourth, the fifth
The minor fall, the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty in the moonlight overthrew you
She tied you to a kitchen chair
She broke your throne, and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Baby I have been here before
I know this room, I've walked this floor
I used to live alone before I knew you.
I've seen your flag on the marble arch
Love is not a victory march
It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

There was a time when you let me know
What's really going on below
But now you never show it to me, do you?
And remember when I moved in you
The holy dove was moving too
And every breath we drew was Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Maybe there’s a God above
But all I’ve ever learned from love
Was how to shoot at someone who outdrew you
It’s not a cry you can hear at night
It’s not somebody who has seen the light
It’s a cold and it’s a broken Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

You say I took the name in vain
I don't even know the name
But if I did, well, really, what's it to you?
There's a blaze of light in every word
It doesn't matter which you heard
The holy or the broken Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

I did my best, it wasn't much
I couldn't feel, so I tried to touch
I've told the truth, I didn't come to fool you
And even though it all went wrong
I'll stand before the Lord of Song
With nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah

Today

Well today, I went to the dentist. I was absolutely shit scared as I walked in and sat in the chair.. But he put this funky numbing stuff on and then injected so I didnt feel it much. Now the left side of my mouth, tongue, chin and neck is numb :P Its really weird cuz I couldnt feel my coffee in my mouth :P and I keep thinking im slobbering

Lent

Okay. So im Anglican but I go to a Catholic school. Anyway, im not sure how big Lent is in the Anglican Church but anyways, this Lent, ive decided to lose weight (its about 6 weeks so a kg a week) and im "half" fasting. The full fast the Catholics do is no meat on Fridays and only 1 small meal on Friday too. Im only doing half-im not eating red meat on Fridays. And im going to try and eat a bit less in order to lose some weight.

Y'see, ive made myself this promise: I will be thin enough to get a belly ring by the time I matriculate. Ideally, id like to be down to 50 kgs but I think that's too little to weigh for my height and build... But 55-60 kgs would be good.  (no, I dont weigh too much more than 60 kgs) (kay +/- 680N) (yes I did just give my weight in Newtons) (Dont Ask) (LOL)

Should I?

Okay, so last year, I started writing again. Only this time, I was serious. I was writing a fan-fic. I had SO much fun while I was writing. Like the words just came into my head and at times I couldnt write quick enough. My question is this. Should I post what ive written? Some people wont like it cause its fan-fic about Green Day... And its also incorrect in places. Cause I wrote it before I knew about massive stadium shows and tours.. And I doubt the story would ever come true. Wait rephrase that. It'll never come true.
Okay I may see Green Day live but Ill never go on tour with them. Dont ask. Just. Ja dont ask :P

South Africa

In Geography, we've been looking at development and I figured something out for myself. People overseas seem to think that people from South Africa are always black, very poor and live in mud huts. But in looking at development, Ive realised that there are some very poor people in SA as well as some very rich people and the people in between. But, for some reason, people overseas only manage to see the very poor people and not the "middle class" people like you and me. Which irritates me. I dont know, maybe its just lack of knowledge (?) (Okay well, I think thats very obvious.)
Another thing overseas people dont seem to realise is that English is spoken here. (okay maybe not as widely as Zulu or Afrikaans) but when I went to Ireland, I met this American lady who seemed surprised that English was my first language (?)

OKay. Im going to stop harping on now. Seriously, I could debate this topic all day. Its just something that I feel strongly about and something that irritates me. LOL

Words

Is it weird to like certain words? Most words I like are weird/uncommon words. Usually words that people dont like.
Also, most of the words ive come across and like are from songs such as:
Masochist from Jesus Of Suburbia
Vigilante from She's A Rebel
Charlatan  from ¿Viva la Gloria? (Little Girl)
Armageddon from Holiday

See, they're quite random words..

When I first "fell in love" with Green Day, my mom thought they were a  bad influence on me cause they swear a lot . Like so: (note thats just a random picture)

I think she's since seen that they dont have a negative affect on me.. She still doesnt appreciate swearing but yeah xD

Stage Names

Ive been wondering, like Mike Dirnt and Tré Cool from Green Day both have stage names.. Would their kids take their real surname (Mike-Pritchard and Tré-Wright) or their stage surname? I dont think they have legally changed their names..
and like if they had to sign an official document or sign for their debit/credit card, which name would they use? My guess is their real name...

When It's Time

In the spirit of Valentines Day. A beautiful love song written by Billie Joe Armstrong:

Words get trapped in my mind
Sorry I don't take the time to feel the way I do
'Cause the first day you came into my life
My time ticks around you

But then I need your voice
As the key to unlock
All the love that's trapped in me
So tell me when it's time
To say I love you

All I want is you to understand
That when I take your hand
It's 'cause I want to
We are all born in a world of doubt
But there's no doubt
I figured out
I love you

All I want is you to understand
That when I take your hand
It's 'cause I want to
We are all born in a world of doubt
And there's no doubt
I figured out
I love you

And I feel lonely for
All the losers that will never take the time to say
What was really on their mind instead
They just hide away
Yet they'll never have
Someone like you to guard them
And help along the way
Or tell them when it's time to say, "I love you"
So tell me when it's time to say "I love you"
