Song Analysis-The Parlotones

Song: Remember When
Album: Life Design
Band: The Parlotones

The Parlotones are the biggest South African band at the moment. I saw them live on 15/4/12 and it was one of the best days of my life. We stood right in front of the stage and we met Kahn (lead singer, 2nd guitar) and Paul (lead guitar) before the show.

Remember when we were young, playing superheroes in our underpants
Then the oldest told us batman wasn't real
So we grew up rather young
We bled real blood just to act real tough
We realised pretty soon real life is really real

In this verse, its telling you that they were dressing like Superman etc "in our underpants" and an older person told them that batman(or any other hero) wasnt real. So they "grew up rather young" because their childhood heros wernt real and pretending they were was boring/stupid etc.

They say, "That's life!"
We're born into this world with no book of rules
Welcome to the hard knock school
They say, "That's life!"

This is the older person telling the children that make believe and almost shattered dreams (if the child believed that they were superman) are just part of life, part of growing up. The person is also telling the kid that life is hard "welcome to the hard knock school" and saying that no one knows the "right way" to live "This world with no book of rules"

Remember when we were young, playing cops and robbers just for fun
Then our neighbourhoods filled up, filled up with real guns
So we learnt real quick that life is sick
when we couldn't fix the problem with a crucifix
It was times like these we wished batman was real

The child is now older, knowing that heros dont exist but rather playing cops and robbers.

I think that the line about the neighbourhood filling up with real guns applies to South Africa but to the world too. Kids carry guns and think they're cool. The kids now realise that life/world isnt the safe place they thought it was and that simply praying on and off wouldnt solve the massive problems in the world.
I really like the last line because it is showing that the children wish that they could return to being innopcent and not being 'street wise'

We're older now but not braver,
Voting for supposed saviours
And it's times like these we wish batman was real

The first line is showing that the person is now older but still scared about what is happening in the world.
They "voting for supposed saviours" i.e. our president.(or any president)
The truth is that the president is an idiot (putting it lightly) and he will not save the country let alone the world.
